The Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013 requires us to do a review every five years. The last review took place in 2023.
What a polling district is
This is a geographical area created by the subdivision of a parliamentary constituency. By law, each community must be a separate one.
If the community is large and to give easy access, it can be divided into smaller districts.
What a polling place is
This is the building or area where a polling station must be located. (There is no legal definition of what it is.)
This could be specific building or the entire polling district.
What a polling station is
This is the room where voting takes place.
How we do reviews
The (Acting) Returning Officer is consulted on the current arrangements. They will then make representations on the existing polling stations used.
Aim of the review
We must seek to make sure that:
- All electors in the constituency have such reasonable facilities for voting as are practicable in the circumstances.
- Polling places are accessible to all electors and all sections of the community.
- When we designate a polling place, we take account of the needs of disabled people.
What we will review
- Where a polling station is in each polling district.
- How accessible each polling station is.
- What buildings could be used.
- The polling district boundaries within each ward of each constituency.
What we cannot review now
- Ward boundaries.
- Parish boundaries.
- Parliamentary constituency boundaries.
