Course description
This course will help you improve your English skills for everyday life at home, work, and in the community. It is for people who can speak English well but need to get better at reading, spelling, and writing.
On the course, you will:
- Take part in fun group and individual activities to improve your reading, writing, spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Improve your reading and spelling by working on phonics.
- Learn how to spell everyday and harder words correctly.
- Practice checking your own writing for mistakes in spelling, grammar, and punctuation.
- Learn how to find and understand the main points in different texts using images and headings to find information.
- Gain confidence and independence by seeing your progress and using new reading and writing skills.
This course is designed to be enjoyable and supportive, helping you become more confident in your English skills for everyday life.

Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who want to develop their English skills they need for independence at home, work, and in the community. It is designed for people who are confident with speaking English but need to develop confidence and competence with the reading, spelling, and writing skills necessary in everyday life. You must be able to attend a minimum of 18 weeks.
What do I need to bring?
- Please bring a notebook and pens.
- You must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection. You’ll also need to install Google Chrome Browser if you do not have this already – it's free to download and use, please visit: www.google.co.uk/chrome.
