Course description
A comprehensive skills based course for adults with learning disabilities to instil confidence and equip them for further study.
Over the 18 week course you will:
- Build confidence - you will be encouraged to cook at home where safe and appropriate, and will be able to recognise, name and use a variety of equipment in the kitchen.
- Have a good understanding of food safety.
- Improve and build on prior skills learnt becoming more independent in the kitchen.
- Learn how to make several dishes. Have lessons in a non threatening, friendly group environment where all are supported and encouraged according to their own particular need.
- Learn transferable skills for the work situation will be taught to all learners and when appropriate these can be used to volunteer in catering posts or take on a paid role if such an opportunity arises.

Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ with learning disabilities who want to improve their health and wellbeing and independence through through developing their cooking skills. This course may also be suitable for those who are recovering from an illness or have mobility issues and need to work at a slower pace, but also want to improve their well-being and confidence before moving on to mainstream courses. It is also an ideal opportunity to interact with others and develop communication skills.
Ideally you will have completed the Cooking - Boost Your Skills (First Step) course or have prior knowledge and experience of cooking. You must be able to follow and understand instructions and have basic knowledge and experience of common kitchen equipment for example how to use a knife and chop. If you are unsure of your suitability for this course please get in contact with the tutor prior to enrolling.
What do I need to bring?
- You may need to bring a support worker depending on your individual learning needs, please discuss this with the tutor prior to enrolment.
- Care workers or learners must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection. You will also need to install the free Google Chrome browser, if you do not have it already.
