Course description
This course gives the learner an opportunity to build on the skills learnt on the first step course by learning to work more independently. It gives the learner the skills to become more self-sufficient improving their health and wellbeing through social interactions with others.
Over the 18 week course the learner will cover the topics below. This is subject to change at the discretion of the tutor and the availability of resources:
- An opportunity to bake and cook, using both the hob and the oven.
- How to cook in a microwave.
- Exploring food from around the world.
- Reading and understanding recipes.
- The negative impact of sugar.
- Meat free.
- Economical shopping when shopping for one – visit to a supermarket.
- Maths and how to budget.
- Staying safe in the kitchen.
- A chance to make new friends and become part of a group of learners.
Course level
Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who this course is for
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ with learning disabilities who want to improve their health and wellbeing and independence through through developing their cooking skills. This course may also be suitable for those who are recovering from an illness or have mobility issues and need to work at a slower pace, but also want to improve their well-being and confidence before moving on to mainstream courses. It is also an ideal opportunity to interact with others and develop communication skills.
Ideally you will have completed the Cooking for One (First Step) course or have prior knowledge and experience of cooking. You must be able to follow and understand instructions and have basic knowledge and experience of common kitchen equipment for example how to use a knife and chop. If you are unsure of your suitability for this course please get in contact with the tutor prior to enrolling.
What you need to bring
- Your own apron.
- You may need to bring a support worker depending on your individual learning needs, please discuss this with the tutor prior to enrolment.
- Care workers or learners must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection. You will also need to install the free Google Chrome browser, if you do not have it already.
