Course description
The course will explore the tempting and tantalising dishes created across Bangladesh, Pakistan, and India, creating several dishes which are delicious and mouth-watering. It will give you the initial insight and history of spices you may have heard of but never used, as well as exploring the special dishes made for different occasions including Eid.
As you cook, you will learn the difference between a chapati and a paratha. Is it turmeric or haldi? Is chaat like chat? When should you use ground coriander, coriander seeds, or fresh coriander leaves?
After this course it will definitely be cheaper to eat in than eat out!
Some of the dishes on the menu are:
- Chapatis and paratha.
- Herbs, spices, and dips.
- Samosa and kebabs.
- Dals.
- Vegetable side dishes.
- Paneer and Spinach Curry.
- Chicken masala.
- Butter chicken.
- Fish masala, chapati.
At the end of the course, you will demonstrate your new skills by making a dish unaided.
Please note dishes may be changed due to external factors at the discretion of the tutor.
Course level
First Step - These courses are for complete beginners. You don't need to have studied the subject before or have any previous knowledge.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who want to become more self-sufficient and pro-active by increasing their knowledge of other communities which will enable them to learn about the culture through its food and traditions.
This course is designed for anyone who has a desire to learn how to create popular South Asian dishes, save money, and acquire new skills and knowledge. No previous experience is required, but you must be confident with basic cooking skills and be able to work independently. For example measuring, cutting, chopping, and slicing unaided. You must also be able to follow instructions.
What do I need to bring?
- A pen and paper to make notes as required and fill in course paper work.
- You must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection.
