Course description
This course is designed to help learners with a learning disability improve their numeracy skills in everyday life. We will use the learners’ individual hobbies and interests to support the topics of everyday maths.
Topics covered will be delivered through activities, discussion, and group work.
- Develop confidence using maths skills in everyday life: budgeting, shopping, buying online, cooking, reading bus/train timetables, finding online information using menus and links.
- Identifying and using coins and notes.
- Telling the time.
- Different ways divide.
- Different ways we can spend money, exploring the benefits and risks of each one.
- Common scams and how to avoid them.
- Weighing and measuring; cooking, gardening.
- Addition through games.
- Planning a trip or event.
- Looking at calendars and planning dates.
- Directions.
- Shapes.
- Patterns and sequences.
Course level
First Step - These courses are for complete beginners. You don't need to have studied the subject before or have any previous knowledge.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who would like to improve skills in maths and money at your own pace. You will be able to work at your own level in friendly and supportive classes. You will gain confidence in addition, counting money, checking change, working out bargains, weighing and measuring. You will also take part in class activities such as quizzes, number games and small group work. You must be able to count and write numbers up to ten.
What do I need to bring?
- You will need to bring a pen.
- Sometimes we use smartphones for finding information so please bring one if you have one. If not, then we can supply you with the necessary equipment during that session.
- You must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection. You’ll also need to install Google Chrome Browser if you do not have this already – it's free to download and use, please visit: www.google.co.uk/chrome.
