Course description
The purpose of this course is to support health and social wellbeing through learning a language.
This course is designed to develop speaking, listening, reading, and writing skills through both individual and group work. The ‘diary’ sessions at the beginning of each class emphasise the speaking skills, where you will share with the rest of the class some highlights of your previous week.
The topics covered in this course include:
- Taking about past events using the perfect tense.
- Buying food in a local shop, market or supermarket – learn useful key-phrases sustain a conversation with the shop assistant.
- Buying clothes and shoes – learn key-phrases to sustain a conversation in a shop requesting a specific colour and size.
- Talking about daily routine – learn how to say at what time something happens.
- Using both past tenses – you will learn to recount past events and habits with the use of the imperfect tense.

Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who have knowledge or experience of basic communication skills when booking hotels, ordering food, and introducing yourself to others, and want to further develop social skills and confidence when interacting with Italian speakers. Learners will keep their minds active, improve their memory, and ability to focus on tasks by studying Italian at a higher level.
What do I need to bring?
- The textbook, pen and paper. The textbook, which is the same one used in the First Step course.
- You must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection. You’ll also need to install Google Chrome Browser if you do not have this already – it's free to download and use, please visit: www.google.co.uk/chrome.
