Course description
The purpose of this course is to support health and social wellbeing through creative art and crafts.
The course is designed to teach you how to work using more advanced material types such as stretch jersey and denim. How to use recycled materials to produce a personally designed wearable garment using the sewing machine and embellished with hand and machine detailing. Design and produce a pineapple doorstop.
On the course you will learn how to:
- Develop your basic sewing skills to a more advanced level. learning advanced stitches and techniques.
- Use an overlocker.
- Use wadding, stuffing and how to add weighted bases to sewn items.
- Use techniques to improve the quality of your finished items.
- Use sewing patterns to produce a wearable garment.
- Match colours and select considered colour palettes.
- Understand, source and appropriately use different tools and materials.
- Gain knowledge of local and online suppliers and producers of materials and learn what materials can be recycled to produce reduced financial and environmental costs.
As well as learning about the impact of the textiles industry on the environment and discovering some of the textiles heritage in West Yorkshire.

Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who have ideally completed the Textiles - Sewing (First Step) course or have prior experience and are confident with basic machine and hand sewing. This course is ideal if you want to build on your sewing skills, develop your entrepreneurial skills and become more self-sufficient.
What do I need to bring?
You must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection.
