Issue and risks
Parking on pavements has been reported as an issue around schools in Calderdale.
Pedestrians are put at risk when people park their vehicles on pavements. In particular vulnerable road users, such as those with:
- impaired vision or mobility;
- pushchairs;
- and also older people.
We commit to design and plan healthier environments to improve the social, economic and environmental health of Calderdale. We want to improve the areas around schools to make them safer and promote walking, cycling and wheeling to school.
Our survey
This took place in September 2024 to gather views on pavement parking around schools in Calderdale from parents and carers.
We had 935 responses:
- 64% said it is a problem at their child's school.
- Over half said they travel to school by car.
How we are tackling the issue
In December 2024, we launched this campaign, funded by West Yorkshire Combined Authority and Active Travel England.
We aim to:
- Reduce the number of people who choose to park on pavements, especially around our schools.
- See an increase in children and their parents/carers walking, cycling and wheeling to school.
We have worked closely with local schools to gather children's thoughts and how they feel about pavement parking. This has been important and has influenced the campaign. We would like to thank all those involved.
