Course description
The purpose of this course is to support health and social wellbeing through creative art and crafts.
This course promises to ignite your creativity and immerse you in the rich, expressive medium of oil paints. Oil painting has a timeless allure. Its velvety textures, vibrant colours, and depth allow artists to convey emotions, stories, and landscapes like no other medium.
An example of the activities which may be covered are listed below:
- Mix colour and create a suitable working palette.
- Focus on light and shade.
- Construct an image using tone.
- Dripping.
- Overpaint from a monochrome base.
- Revisiting perspective – for example atmospheric.
- Make new connections with people living locally with similar interests.
- Increase your confidence by seeing success and progression through the developments in new skills and the completion of an individual project.
Topics are subject to availability of resources and will be determined by the tutor.

Next Step - The aim of these courses is to take your learning and confidence to the next stage. You will learn more about applying your skills further and delve deeper into the subject. For learners who have completed the First Step course.
Who is this course for?
Residents of Calderdale aged 19+ who want to enhance their wellbeing and confidence through art. Ideally, you will have completed the Painting and Drawing Skills (First Step) course. It is also suitable for adults who have prior knowledge of basic drawing techniques for example line drawing, sketching and perspectives. The focus of this course is predominantly oil painting and competence in colour.
What do I need to bring?
- Please bring your own apron.
- You may need to bring a support worker depending on your individual learning needs, please discuss this with the tutor prior to enrolment.
- You must be able to access the web-based learning platform Google Classroom during the course. To do this you will need access to IT equipment such as a smartphone, laptop, PC or tablet, and a stable internet connection. You’ll also need to install Google Chrome Browser if you do not have this already – it's free to download and use, please visit: www.google.co.uk/chrome.
